Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP)
To control an increased amount of styrene emissions generated from the addition of a second production line, a leading manufacturer of reinforced plastic composite “fiberglass” recreational vehicle sidewalls installed a 45,000 scfm Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer from The CMM Group.
The expansion project is intended to duplicate the existing production lines VOC capture system which includes two gel-coat enclosures, a cure tunnel and resin application booth. Designed to destroy 98% of the nearly 200 pounds of VOCs generated per hour during the company’s 24 hour per day, 7 days per week production schedule, the CMM RTO was installed to reduce the overall concentration of styrene to less than 50 ppm in the manned resin application booth with a design goal of less than 25 ppm.
CMM also installed a secondary heat recovery and make-up air system custom designed to utilize the RTO exhaust heat to preheat and supply make-up air to the resin booth as well as within the general production area.

To provide a New Hampshire manufacturer with an emission control system to destroy the air pollutants generated from a reinforced plastics composites lamination production process, The CMM Group installed a 13,000 scfm Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer on an outdoor concrete pad.
Designed to handle current needs as well as the future doubling of process exhaust air volume and VOC loads, The CMM RTO destroys 98% of the styrene and methyl methacrylate VOCs generated during the company’s 24 hours per day/5 days per week production schedule by subjecting them to 1,500°F within the combustion chamber. In addition, the unit is equipped with a heat exchanger that provides a 95% thermal heat efficiency.

When a major manufacturer of fiberglass reinforced composite panels needed to install emission controls to handle the styrene produced in the company’s manufacturing process, they selected The CMM Group.
To treat the emissions generated by the company’s three wide web production lines that operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, CMM installed a 40,000 scfm Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer designed to provide a 98%+ VOC destruction efficiency at an operating set point temperature of 1,500° F. In addition, CMM also designed and installed three production line wet-end enclosures featuring a collection hood fitted with low-cost disposable filter pads within each enclosure. CMM also installed filter boxes above each production line to capture large particulates and provide high efficiency final filtration.
To provide important energy savings, CMM installed an energy recovery system designed to utilize the RTO exhaust heat to preheat and supply air to the general production area by using the six make-up air units already in place. The energy recovery system is designed to transfer over 6,000 BTU’s per hour by taking the 70,000 scfm exhaust from the RTO and routing it through a heat exchanger to heat the fresh- filtered air to a set-point temperature during the colder heating months. The hot-side of the heat exchanger is bypassed during non-heating months so that the make-up air units can be turned off or operated at ambient temperature.
